We had beautiful dogs, an amazing assistant and choices of some fun sets! For our monthly DogBreedz Mini-Session, there is a choice of sets for the participants but the sitting fee ($59) includes a single set for their time with me. I had a little wiggle room this month and treated the Scottie dogs to multiple set changes - their moms have been SO patient and supportive, waiting for me to be back on set again for their dogs, I wanted to do SOMETHING to thank them!

This month we offered a variety of set themes: a golden Autumn set, a spooky (yet fun!) Halloween set and of course, classic un-themed set choices. You can view all the photos for the day on my photo gallery site by CLICKING here (check back later in the week ... there is an adorable - and talented - Chihuahua you DON'T want to miss that will be posted as soon as his mom returns my model release).

Which set is YOUR favorite? (pay no attention to that annoying signature stamp - final images to my clients don't have that, but I have to protect my photos that I put out on the 'net!)
It's been way too long since I've been doing regular shoots! Just when it looked like my Spa schedule was lightening and allowing me back to the studio and traveling to shows in Jan 2015, Fate stepped in and plans changed. One of my favorite people, the owner of my Spa, spent most of 2015 in and out of the hospital, at some points fighting for her life. I promised her that no matter what, she would have a viable business to return to when she moved past this struggle. 12-14 hour days keeping her business on track didn't leave me any time for playing with the pups in front of the camera!

I am beyond thrilled to say that she is back with us at work and getting stronger every day. And I am finally able to open the studio to regular shoots and regularly scheduled mini-shoots. Look to the right on this blog for upcoming times and let's meet on the set!
And more studio time to boot. 2015 is barely here and it is already ROCKIN'! This weekend I'll be watching some of my favorite clients (and their handlers) in the ring in Palm Springs. I'll have a sneak preview on Monday for my Blog Followers. Stay tuned!
Due to the higher demand for my services 2014 is bringing a few changes to DogBreedz.net, hopefully to the benefit of my wonderful clients. I've been overstretching myself lately trying to honor everyone's requests and that has meant falling behind, even if only by a day, on self-imposed deadlines. Toss in the occasional techno-glitch and then the backup is painful for you AND for me. I love that my images are being sought after by so many and thank you all for making my success a "problem" to deal with! I do not want to raise my prices at this time so instead will be implementing the following changes.

New for 2014:
- I will continue to cover tax and shipping on print orders (my small way to thank you for choosing my images for your walls, albums and print ads).
- I will be accepting a limited number of ringside requests per show. Get your requests in to me ASAP to secure your spot in my shooting schedule!
- While at a show sight I will be limiting the number of private portrait shoots. Again, make your requests prior to running into me on the show grounds to secure your personal shoot.
- I will be expanding my availability for your private portfolio shoots, both in studio and on location. There will be a $30 reservation fee (non-refundable) that will be applied to the cost of your chosen session. Email for your appointment time.
- I am expanding my availability to shoot as official show photographer for Specialty Shows. If your club is in need of a photographer, please do let me know.
- I am on the lookout for some horse events to shoot at. If you are a hunter/jumper or rodeo person, please let me know - I'd love to attend your practices or competitive events!
- If you are a photographer in need of a second shooter or on-site assistant, let's talk!

My main website will be updated in February with these changes. THANK YOU for being a part of my success and I look forward to helping you showcase YOUR pets - cats, dogs, iguanas, tortoises, birds, horses and more!DogBreedz - Pet Photography by Peggy Mundellhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11529751700647408015noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2044522326107917914.post-33663649755016972462014-01-22T08:12:00.000-08:002014-01-22T08:12:00.246-08:00National Answer Your Cat's Question Day ... Today!Guess what today is? Not much of a riddle, when I've already answered that question in the post title. Thanks to our friends over at DogKnobit, we found out that today, January 22, 2014, is National Answer Your Cat's Question Day! I wish I could tell you the origins of this unusual day, but I came up short in my Google-searching. The best I can offer is that it falls on the 22nd of January every year.

Instead of the intended explanation, I offer you a couple of photos to enjoy: an inquisitive kitten imporing "Oooh! Choose me! Choose ME!" and another little miss getting her question answered from a dog's point of view. Enjoy!

We would love to know in the comments below: what question did your cat ask you? And what was your answer?
Especially my Photographer Friends. I need to hear how YOU do it. How do you balance the "must do's" in your life? How do you rock two jobs and still get a good night's sleep to boot?

Customer Service is a priority for me. It's a pet peeve of mine when CS falls short. And lately I am my own pet peeve - ouch! I have not been rockin' it in that department. Knocking it out of the ballpark is my goal. This summer I've been hardly connecting in a good solid bunt. I know the heat has something to do with it (last summer's hot hot temperatures affected me to the point that I was barely functioning for about 4 months, so I was ready this year with diet, supplements, and not overdoing my schedule). The only thing left under my control is time management.

I've done a couple of things different already: my non-essential shoots have been skipped (if I'm hired, I'm there ... but my fun or freelance shoots are skipped if I'm not finished editing my paid/booked gigs). I am taking a day off now and then to just play with friends - mental health days and showing people in my life how much I value them go a long way to making me more productive at work!

Talk to me, Blog Peeps - let me know I'm not alone and allow me to gain insight, inspiration and tools from YOUR experiences - I thank you!
What if your dog died and then came back as a ghost … that could talk? Would you welcome him back with open arms or run away scared to death?

This is the premise of IT’S JUST A DOG, a new novel about love, loss, and one man’s dog who rises up yapping from the grave.

Charlie Keefe is not just your typical dog lover –– he’s a world famous dog painter, a.k.a. “The Picasso of Pooch Portraits”. Unfortunately, Charlie’s beloved muse, Pete, his lovable Jack Russell terrier, has just died. And he’s totally devastated by the loss of his furry best friend.

So, after months of grieving over his dearly departed soulmate, Charlie reluctantly agrees to foster a new puppy -- a cute Cavalier King Charles spaniel named Brownie from the local animal shelter. Soon after, Charlie is surprised to find himself falling head over heels with this new puppy girl, his ‘Rebound Dog’, as he calls her –– as well as being romantically attracted to Janelle Jordan, the head hound at the dog rescue.

But then complications arise when the ghost of his old dog, Pete, mysteriously reappears one night and comes back to haunt him and the new puppy –– setting off a bizarre chain of events that throw Charlie’s life, career, and entire belief system into chaos

If you’ve enjoyed such classic dog books as The Art of Racing in the Rain and A Dog’s Purpose, then you are bound to find a place in your heart for IT’S JUST A DOG.

IT’S JUST A DOG is not just for dogs. It’s for anyone who has ever lost a pet –– and learned to love again. If you’re a feel-good fan of dog books, make IT’S JUST A DOG your special treat!
But life kept getting in the way and other things had to be higher on my priority list (or so I thought). Last summer a dear friend of mine reached out to me to help her stay on track in training her Cocker Spaniel and getting ready for their CGC (Canine Good Citizen) test. That was her first step on the way to her own goal of having a therapy dog. I am so happy she did! Making the commitment to spend one early morning a week together, seeing where progress had been made and where training could be strengthened, was just what I needed to get out of the house during a time when the heat of the summer had me physically drained. It wasn't much of a stretch to start bringing my own "kids" along and getting them ready for the test as well. Bennett studied his books and Indie practiced the "Appearance and Grooming" part of the test whenever they could.

Their friend Flirt took the testing procedures a little more seriously.
As you might be able to tell from this photo, from left to right: Indie is the class clown, Bennett tried hard to smile for mom and Flirt gave her best Commencement Pose. I love these dogs!

The next step was a little training in the things our chosen organization (Love On A Leash) wants their therapy dogs to know: how to crawl (so when they are on the bed with a patient they don't tromp on sensitive skin, or step on a tube or IV line and pull anything out), how to stay calm when someone falls in front of them, getting them familiar with wheelchairs and walkers, how to "pose" to present the best part of them for petting (for our smaller dogs, that means turning their back to a client for easy petting, so their faces and ears are safe from grasping hands), how to "paws up!" to say HI to someone in a bed - and so much more. After passing their controlled evaluation (all three with flying colors!) they were well on their way. One more step to go! Each dog/owner team had to complete 10 hours of "supervised" visits. That means going on the therapy visits with a Love On A Leash Visit Captain. Flirt and her mom flew through their hours. At first I was going to alternate each dog and try to finish them about the same time but I learned of some great volunteer opportunities (and needs) in the organization that requires a team to be completely certified. So after talking to my Chapter Leader I decided that Indie and I would complete our training hours first, then it would be Bennett's turn to get some hours under his belt. Last week Indie finished her supervised hours and passed her final evaluation! We are very excited by all that means to us.

During the supervised visits the dog/owner teams are encouraged to try many different types of therapy environments. Indie and Flirt were naturals at a Health Fair, since they are used to being at events and "on display" to the public. Doesn't Flirt have a great smile?

This week another friend of mine underwent hip replacement surgery and I was so happy to find that the facility she is in for her physical therapy recovery is just up the street from me. I've been popping in on a regular basis to bring her news of the outside world. I found out from the front desk what would be needed for me to bring in one of my dogs (not as a Love On A Leash representative yet, just as a friend bringing a dog to visit another friend). The Activities Person was so happy that I was doing this - we are set up to talk about regular LOAL visits as soon as Indie's official paperwork arrives and I clear it with my Chapter Leader. My friend has Springer Spaniels at home and she has a soft spot for my Cocker kids, too.

Yesterday was a hard day for me. I just received very disappointing news that meant I wouldn't be able to attend the National Cocker Spaniel Specialty show in Reno later this month. I was crushed - this was something that I had been looking forward to for a few months, and was a chance to see some wonderful friends from other states/other parts of CA that I can't see regularly. I decided that sitting at home crying (yes, I was that disappointed!) was pretty useless and I believe that when someone is down, the best thing to get past that feeling is to get "out of self" and help someone else. So, Bennett had a good brush-out and trim (thanks to his fab groomer who did this on her day off!) and off we went to the PT facility to visit Vicki.

We stopped at the front desk to drop off shot records and a photo and were given a very warm welcome. Walking down the entry hall we were stopped by everyone for a pet and a talk. I mean everyone - staff and patients alike! This is going to be a wonderful addition to the LOAL rotation, when it is all set up! No one smiled bigger than Vicki as we entered the room - some canine snuggles was just what she needed that night! (again - cell phone photo!)

As I left to go home that night after our visit, I felt better. Still disappointed, but better. My dashed expectations for a small vacation were nothing compared to what other people are going through. I can still celebrate with my friends through their own photos and facebook posts. And I had to wonder - who benefits from these therapy dog visits? Not just the patients and the staff, but the human part of the therapy teams as well. Going to visit Vicki lifted my own spirits and put things in perspective. Today, as I look at the photo of Bennett snuggled up on Vicki's lap, I noticed the big smile on his own face and realized that this is great for him as well.

Who really benefits from a dog therapy visit? EVERYONE!

(PS: I arrived home after the visit to find out that yet another wonderful person in my life has reached out to me and I will be able to attend the Cocker Spaniel National show after all! I am grateful for the good KARMA in my life!)
The show grounds for Bahia Sur Kennel Club's annual show is always so pretty in photographs. The weather on the other hand can be either oppressive (hot hot hot!) or summery (still hot, but with a very comfortable breeze). Luckily for me on my Sunday visit the show grounds were very summery and breezy. Ahhhh!

Beckham (GCH Winfree Dream Boy At Rosecliffe)is now officially a favorite of mine. What a darling ECS he is. So ready for smoochies and hugs. Of course, he is a "parti" in my mind (but in reality, he is a very handsome orange roan). English or American, I just love me some Parti Cockers (swoon)! Moving over to the Herding Group, I got to spend time with Paladin Artemis Nike Clayfield (pictured), who was a friend of beautiful Indy who I got to cuddle up to in West Covina in April. Demi (GCH Derrydown Double Indemnity) the Dandie Dinmont Terrier strutted her stuff for me again, all the way into the Terrier Group Ring. Layla (Brussels Griffon GCH Sleepyhollow You Can Do Magic Bear) was very happy to just let her hair down and play with me in the shade when she was done in the ring. Also pictured is Dalmatian Milla (Tateland Sandlapper's Good Fortune) and Scottish Terrier Shelly (GCH Blueberry Shall We Dance). Border Terrier Tatum and Scottie Pieter were my puppy nephews in attendance, getting the feel for the show ring and getting ready to show the world what they are made of.
Enjoy these sneak peeks while I work hard at all of my images for the day - and be sure to let me know when YOUR beautiful show dog will be in a California ring!
Barbara's vivid and dramatic stories, told with a wicked sense of humor, will make you laugh out loud. She definitely gets what living with rescued dogs (nine of them!) is all about. This book will inspire you with the couple's unstinting love, devotion, and respect for dogs as family members. You'll be glad to include it in your treasured collection of great dog books.

When Barbara meets her future husband, Ray, it is love-and dog-at first sight. Over the course of thirty-two years, seventeen relocations and nine dogs, their mutual love of dogs guides them on their unconventional path. The love that Barbara and Ray get in return is literally lifesaving, with one dog attacking a lethal intruder and another discovering Barbara’s cancer. Her own survival story underscores the story of how her dogs become survivors themselves.

Each new dog adds its own dynamic to the family, sometimes upending it. From Turbo (whose Spock-like ears may have provided super powers), Barbara learns about the will to live; Lexington demonstrates incredible patience and an inexplicable love of golf; Madison teaches that laughter is truly the best medicine and that the whole “nine lives thing” is not reserved just for cats; Morgan should be sainted for tolerating Izzy, who is as cute as she is bad. Barbara is certain that somewhere in doggie heaven there is a poster that says “If you are sick, injured or in need of really expensive medical care, FIND THESE HUMANS!”
"Samurai Update:

Our friend, Samurai, definitely has a fighting spirit! He decided he did not like his NG (nasogastric) tube and essentially coughed it out! He is actually tolerating very small amounts of syringe feeding by mouth on his own. Dr. Lisa Weeth, our board certified nutritionist, has done a consult and we are working with her to slowly and safely reintroduce food to him (if fed too quickly he can become very ill). It is still going to be a very long process. Dr. Greg Griffeth, our board certified dermatologist, has also done a consult and Sammy is on the appropriate treatments for his skin at this time.

The attached photo (edit from DogBreedz: it's a darling photo, you'll have to check out their FB page to see it!) is of Samurai with his new bunny friend -- a gift left by an adoring member of his wide-reaching fan club. Thank you all for your love and support.
WARNING: while I'm not including photos, there are pix/video included in my link and the story is heartwrenching. Even for me, having been deeply involved in Rescue since 2002. My post is a slightly watered-down version, for those who might be more faint of heart.

A seemingly Good Samaritan couple turned a Cocker Spaniel into their local SPCA, claiming to have found him after seeing a garbage bag moving on the side of the road. Their reign as local heros was short-lived however, when it was discovered that the dog (at that time being called Morgan) was actually registered to the couples' address since 2007, under the name Samurai. IT WAS THEIR OWN DOG! Now, the Rescue Person in me is trying VERY hard to say "at least they finally gave Samurai a chance". During owner relinquishments that is the mantra that I kept in my head so I could be as civil as possible until the papers were signed, giving Rescue legal ownership of the dog they could no longer care for, or in some cases have never taken care of. But, if you click thru to the news story, you'll see that darling Samurai is fighting for his life, at only 8 years old. The accused couple, Keith and Shauna Morgan of Brick Township, New Jersey, have been arrested and face multiple charges of animal cruelty, neglect and abandonment and hindering an investigation. If Samurai doesn't make it, the charges will increase.

KUDOS to the local police, SPCA and the Red Bank Veterinary Hospital where Samurai is being treated and has a chance at life - a chance at a good life. You are my heros today!

You can find many news reports on this horrific neglect/abuse case by googling key words. My link to the ABC Local news story came from googling: wall county nj cocker spaniel.

If you know of someone who isn't able to take proper care of their pet(s), get to know them. Kindly offer education without judging - maybe they don't know the basics of pet care. If that doesn't help the animal, let the owners know about the local SPCA and area Rescues (find out first if the Rescue takes owner relinquishments, not all of them do - do the research for the owner ... for the pet). If the owners aren't listening or improving their care - report them to the local authorities. We have to look out for the animals, they don't have a voice of their own. Maybe, just maybe, we can help the animal into a better home before the neglect reaches a point of cruelty.
Dog-ma the Zen of Slobber by Barbara Boswell Brunner

Welcome to the first DogBreedz Book Review - the first of many, I am hoping! If you are a dog lover (and if you are here, you most likely are ...) then this is a book you'll want to take the time to read - and enjoy. And just in case you aren't sure if my taste in books runs parallel to yours: at the bottom of the review there is a list of participating blogs on this Book Tour. You can not only read what other bloggers think about the book, but on March 26th you can follow the link to enter the giveaway of FIVE signed copies of the book!

When I was offered the chance to review this book for the Virtual Book Tour, I jumped at the chance. As a child I was a voracious reader, but now "Life" seems to get in the way of the simple pleasures of reading. Dog-Ma the Zen of Slobber seemed like just the title to indulge in and Barbara Boswell Brunner doesn't disappoint. From beginning to end (cover-to-cover just doesn't seem appropriate for an e-book) you'll enjoy each of the stories and appreciate the learning curve of the dog owners. From bringing their first puppy home at five weeks (FIVE WEEKS?!? I was ready to hate the book, just for that start! I'm a confirmed preacher of not separating a pup from its litter until ten - or better yet twelve - weeks, but that's for another post) to learning how to home-cook their food to help a dog avoid seizure symptoms, Barbara and Ray evolved in their dog knowledge and care. The writing style is deceptively simple: it's easy to feel like you are sitting across a cafe table from them and sharing dog stories. But the humor and yes, the heart-wrenching reality as the dogs pass on, is infused within the stories and the book becomes hard to put down. Keep a few tissues nearby, your eyes will get a bit teary in places, as only a true dog-lover can understand. You'll finish the book feeling like Barb and Ray are old friends of your own.

***** ***** *****
For dog lovers everywhere ...

Barbara grew up in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania with her parents, sister and always a dog, or two or three. She graduated Summa Cum Laude from a small women's college in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. Meeting her husband in Washington, DC, they continued together on a journey as self-proclaimed dog addicts. In the ensuing years, she founded three successful businesses in the Pacific Northwest and is a prolific fundraiser for breast cancer research. She and her husband are retired and now reside in Southwest Florida with two dogs and copious amounts of dog fur. She is currently working on indulging her well known flip flop addiction.

This beautiful terra-cotta pendant will compliment almost any outfit and will show your love for the animals in your life. Just under 1.5" in diameter, the charm features a bold paw print and is held on a satin tie. The "clasp" is a matching terra-cotta bead and loop closure.

A handsome piece on its own - but it gets even better when you realize it is also a piece of original aromatherapy jewelry. Just add ONE drop of your favorite essential oil to the FRONT of the necklace and rub it in. The oil absorbs into the clay and allows you to experience the power of essential oil aromatherapy throughout your day. It’s like having your own personal diffuser! One drop is all it takes and you can change essences each time you apply - the most recent application will be the strongest essence. I suggest you only apply it to the front so there won't be any oils rubbing against delicate fabrics.
One of my 2013 goals is to hold one fundraiser photo shoot per calendar month (February's shoot was unfortunately scheduled for Superbowl Sunday - ! - and was cancelled, so it looks like there will only be 11 for this year instead of 12). January's charity was the Bow Wow Buddy Foundation, supported by the franchise chain of doggy day care/boarding facilities called Camp Bow Wow. I've loved the folks at all three Camps that I've been to (El Cajon, Livermore and Memphis) and the dog-customers of those businesses have all been happy well-adjusted fur-kids on set. Between a personal relationship with the local El Cajon facility from my Rescue days and the fact that they are a short .75 miles away from me, they are my main charity again this year - we'll be setting up there 5 times throughout 2013, each time with a different seasonal set theme. January's set was preparing for the upcoming Valentine's Holiday and the dogs definitely brought their Sweet on! All photos are posted and ready for viewing in their online gallery.
They had 9 Qualifying scores out of 10 runs and 7 of those 9 were first places and she *really* wanted memories of that day. I only had a couple of photos that made the cut after looking them over with my critical eye and she was very disappointed to see only a couple of photos posted. No matter how wonderfully crisp and action packed, she had hoped for more! In my portrait work, my "less than perfects" are gone forever and not able to be seen, but in my sporting events I hold on to them for a while, for times just as this. In portrait work, where the shoot is under tight control, my outtakes are usually eyes half closed, noses being licked, a head whipping around to hear something off set, maybe a face unattractively wrinkled as a sneeze hits. No one want to see those (unless they are hilarious out-takes ... I do keep those fun ones!). But in event photography maybe it's just a slight focus issue, catching a dog at almost-but-not-quite perfect stride, a handler's shadow falling across the frame - any number of things. Some of my event clients are more than happy to have those available to purchase - especially early in their show or agility careers when they don't have a boat-load of images yet (or when their dogs haven't mastered the perfect tuck at a jump or a perfect drive/reach in the show ring). Jamie was thrilled with my one-off photos and they are now proudly a part of her image collection.
I had a delightful ordering session with Megan the Toy Poodle's mom. Megan flew over the same CPE course in January taking every obstacle with apparent glee. My time with mom at a local Starbucks was another example of why I love offering the free sessions. Not only do I get to meet the human behind the dog, but I get to hear first-hand what people REALLY want out of their photos, to make them personal - to make them their favorites of all time. In Megan's case, mom loved that the photos showcased her fur-daughter, but where was the atmosphere? How could anyone tell these were agility performance photos? Like the one I have featured here, my final creations were highlighting only the dog, and mom wanted some of the agility in the photos as well. Taking her words home with me, I reworked her favorites and they are now exactly what was desired. And will have a proud place on Megan's Wall Of Fame in the home!
Jamie is the driving force behind SMRTDog Training. She extended a generous offer for me to head out to one of her group classes and photograph the students while their humans put them through their training paces. I joined the beginning agility class over the weekend (before my real winter cold finally got the best of me) and captured images. Those will be up soon in their own gallery for proofing. I do hope to be able to continue visiting with future classes - not only do the students get a head start on their agility photos, but it helps desensitize the dogs to the sound of the camera ringside.

That's it for this past week's sneak peeks - enjoy the photos and let me know what happened over your weekend. Hug your dog for me!

Ah, the sights and sounds of a dog show - how I love them! My first conformation show of 2013, the Orange Empire Dog Club "Orange Classic" in San Bernardino, California. On Saturday I sat ringside (braving a bit of rain) for the following breeds/classes: German Shorthaired Pointers, Obedience Open B, Swedish Vallhund, Finnish Lapphund, German Shepherd Dog, Collie (Smooth), Collie (Rough), Brittany, German Wirehaired Pointer, Vizsla and some random candids. Sunday found me enjoying the English Springer Spaniels and "my" breed, the Cocker Spaniels (ASCOB and Parti). A private shoot with Layla took me away from the Black variety this show. I had high hopes to be ringside at some of the indoor breeds, but the loaner camera that is supposed to rock the indoor lighting didn't pan out this time. Ringside Candids should be online and ready to go by this Friday in their own galleries at http://dogbreedz.smugmug.com/Dog-Shows.
A group of international Border Terrier friends have a specially marked tennis ball, affectionately known as the TTBII (the orginal TTB went through the Bermuda Triangle of a postal system and was never heard from again, so it was reincarnated). The TTBII travels the world and is seen through photographs enjoying all sorts of local tourist spots. It is currently being hosted by my roommate (you can find her on FaceBook - ask her to add you to the TTBII FaceBook group, if you are interested - tell her DogBreedz sent you). I get to participate as Official SoCal Photographer - fun!
Studio sessions will be held at my Santee studio and location candids are available at San Diego County area parks or beaches. That is a possible shoot, as well. I look forward to hearing from you!
